KUALA LUMPUR, Saturday 23 October 2010 (Bernama) -- It was proposed at the Umno General Assembly 2010 today that the party set up an Umno Ulama Council to discuss and explain religious issues raised by political parties.
Perlis delegate Fathul Bari Mat Jahya said members of the council could be selected from among the 191 party divisions and who were also delegates to the Umno annual general assembly.
"We don't want different people to speak or explain differently on arising religious matters. There should instead be coordination in issuing statements," he said when debating on the motions on religion and education.
On another note, Fathul Bari said the institution of imam needed to be strengthened by creating special posts for them by the Public Service Department.
He said currently they were many graduates from renowned Islamic universities such as Al-Azhar University, and it would be a waste if they were not recruited for the mosques to strengthen that institution.
Fathul Bari also said that it was now clear that "Malaysia is an Islamic country although some areas are not perfect".
Therefore, he said, religious transformation must take place to correct the imperfections.
"Religious transformation is not like technology or economic transformation. Religious transformation means we strive to get Muslims to return to the true teachings of Islam," he said.
Sabah delegate Datuk Mohd Suhaili Mohd Said, meanwhile, urged the delegates to emulate party president Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak who made effort to explain the concept of wasatiyah or moderation to the world, as a strategy to fight terrorism committed by Islamic extremists.
"The president (Najib) is the Islamic World's champion at the global stage as he is courageous to reprimand the world and had stressed that real peace could only be achieved through the wasatiyah concept."
On education, Mohd Suhaili said the government had been providing moral and financial support to the Teachers Foundation because retired teachers could be smart partners of the government.
