What is P2 Card

P2 card was introduced by Panasonic, and now are most used to storage HD videos for high transferring speed and excellent recording features. According to Wikipedia, P2 card is :

“The P2 card is essentially a RAID of Secure Digital (SD) memory cards with an LSI controller tightly packaged in a die-cast PC Card (formerly PCMCIA) enclosure, so data transfer rate increases as memory capacity increases. The system includes cameras, decks as drop-in replacements for Videocassette recorders (VCR), and a special 5.25-inch computer drive for random-access integration with non-linear editing systems (NLE). The cards can also be used directly where a PC card (PCMCIA) slot is available, as in most older notebook computers, as a normal hard disk drive, although a custom software driver must first be loaded.”

P2 card evolves the latest memory technology, it can provide faster, superb quality recording for an average of five years (with normal operation)(take E-series P2 card as an example).Besides, it can offer optimum flexibility, including:

Reliable performance and instant access

Over 110,000 P2 units in use around the world

Compatibility with all major NLEs and servers

Compatibility with all P2 camcorders, P2 recorders and workflow tools

P2 cards can store all P2 frame rates and formats: HD, SD, DVCPRO HD/50/25 and AVC-Intra 100/50

FAQs

1.) How to use P2 cards with new laptops?

Via IEEE.1394 and USB 2.0 connectivity and 3rd party adapters.

Most laptops or computers have one or both of these. Also, the new Panasonic AJ-PCD35 P2 Drive provides super-fast connectivity via a PCI-e connector to desktop computers. In addition, 3rd party adapters are available to connect this unit to laptops.

2.) Compare the transfer speed of P2 card and other memory cards

E Series P2 cards offer fast transfer speeds (up to 1.2Gbps), while professional solid-state memory cards offered by other manufacturers offer up to 800Mbps transfer speeds.

3.) Why are the new E Series P2 cards based on a PCMCIA form factor?

These new cards have the PCMCIA form factor to ensure compatibility between all existing P2 cameras, recorders and workflow tools. Panasonic continues development on the P2 card platform. For example, the new E Series P2 card achieves a faster transfer speed (maximum 1.2 Gbps transfer speed) allowing for improved transfer/offload of P2 content.
